Boiler  Repairs

The size of the boiler should be matched to the size of the property. If the boiler is oversized, then the fuel bills will be excessive. If the boiler is undersized, it may not generate enough heat in winter. The ideal size for a boiler is one that copes adequately on the coldest day of the year. Most boilers are oversized by at least 30%.

Combination Boilers

These boilers provide both instant hot water and central heating installer, but not at the same time. They are hot water priority which means when hot water is being run there is no heat output to the radiators. These boilers are ideal in smaller homes where space is at a premium or where the demand for hot water is not too great. These are not recommended for houses with more than one bathroom due to the hot water flow rate which can only feed one tap at a time.

These boilers are built with an expansion vessel and a circulating pump, which allows for a lot tidier installation.

Nottingham Central Heating firm Midlands Gas Installations says “Look after your boiler… or you might find it goes on strike”

A recent survey by Nottingham Central Heating Installation firm Midlands Gas Installations found that only 60% of people remembered to get an annual boiler service – far less than those who remembered to have their Gas Fire Serviced or Car serviced.

The running theme of the survey seemed to be “out of sight, out of mind” with many people viewing their boiler – which in the majority of cases was hidden away in a cupboard, in the garage or in an unused room – as a “white box on a wall” that should “just work.” Whereas those people with Gas Fires, which tended to be in living rooms or dining rooms had their Gas Fires serviced on a regular basis as they had a visual reminder every time they walked in that room.

“The same was true of their cars” said Simon Matthew of Midlands Gas Installations, “they viewed their cars as an expensive piece of equipment sat on their driveways that they relied on daily to ‘just work’ – the car was needed to take them to work, to the shops or wherever their owners needed to go – and as such they knew it needed servicing on a regular basis. They were happy to spend 200 pounds Sterling + to service their car but were reluctant to spend 70-80 pounds Sterling to service their boiler which they also rely on daily to provide them with heating and hot water. The key rationale in the majority of cases being they didn’t have a daily reminder of their need to look after their boiler.”

“For customers who didn’t have an Insurance Policy in place to cover a boiler breakdown and who used a local plumber they saw costs of 300 to 600 pounds Sterling on a boiler repair. In the majority of cases an annual gas boiler service could have prevented or identified these problems without needlessly leaving them without any heating or hot water. The majority of boiler breakdowns occur between October and February when the weather turns cold, and due to increased demand availability of replacement parts reduces – putting the customer in a lose-lose situation. It’s for this reason we encourage our customers to have their annual gas boiler service during the summer.”

A regular boiler service can keep your boiler in tip-top condition, which can also have a beneficial effect on your heating bills, although if your boiler is more than 10 or 15 years old it could be wasting 235 pound Sterling per year on your heating bills – boilers which are more than 10 or 15 years old can be only 60% efficient, compare this to new gas boiler installation where A-Rated boilers which are more than 90% efficient.

Simon Matthew commented “We’re now only completing boiler installations for customers with up to ten years warranty as standard. The boiler warranties provided by the manufacturers we install offer customers huge savings against the cost of a yearly insurance policy against boiler breakdowns, but the key criteria for a valid warranty is an annual gas boiler service as the manufacturers know how important that is.”

Nottingham Survey Results

80% of people surveyed with a Gas Fire had a Gas Fire Service every year

More than 80% of people surveyed with a car had it serviced every year, as well as doing their own “service” by topping up the oil, washer fluid etc

Less than 60% of people surveyed with a boiler remembered to have a boiler service every year

Less than 30% of people surveyed with a boiler had it on display, more than 70% had their boiler installation in a cupboard, back bedroom or garage.

More than 90% of people surveyed were concerned about the affects of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

Boiler Insurance And Central Heating Cover Advice

You should consider the age of your boiler. Have you just had your boiler installed? If this is the case, then the boiler will probably be covered by a manufacturer warranty, so insurance wouldn’t be necessary. But what if your boiler isn’t new?[1]

These yearly costs are estimated costs based on heating and hot water demands of a three-bedroomed, semi-detached, well-insulated house (insulated cavity walls, 270mm loft insulation, thermostatic radiator valves and insulated primary pipe work), the efficiencies of typical heating systems and the current average price per fuel per kWh (as at Sept 2008). They are not derived from actual fuel bills. [4]

The basic boiler breakdown plans cost about £6-8 per month and this would nearly always include breakdown repairs, parts and VAT so make sure you are aware of the offer. Remember that each call out could cost you a set fee of around £50 as well. If it turns out that your boiler or heating system is broken beyond repair than you would normally be given a cash sum toward a new system but each policy can vary as you how much will actually be given.

For £8-10 per month you can get a basic central heating breakdown insurance plan which covers electrical faults and boiler repairs on your heating system. This also includes hot water repairs, parts, labour and VAT. Again remember that each call out will cost you around £50.

If your boiler or heater is LPG fuelled or a duel purpose boiler such as Rayburn or Aga then they may not be covered in any way, this is vitally important to check out as well.
